Frankenstein
Short film
2023 - ESA Saint-Luc Bruxelles - Animation lesson
A short film we made at school with my friend Basile Masson.
We had to work on a scenario and storyboard then bring it to life through animation, we chose to mix a lot of technics so we could try and learn a lot. We chose to take the scene of Frankenstein where the doctor gives life to the monster in the laboratory of his house and make it ours and funnier and more gore.

We made a maquette of an house with cardboard then painted, glued it with some other materials to make some further shots for the introduction.
We also made a fake body with fence serving as a structure, on which we put pizza dough to create a false skin. We opened the fake body and made false organs with ropes, air ballons, fake bones in modeling clay and fake blood by mixing tomato salsa with Nesquik so the doctor could extract these organs and use it to create a new monster, a cute unicorn.

The Unicorn was made by ourselves also in modeling clay, so we could experiment with stop motion and transform easily and freely its body.

To shoot, we used photography studio lights and a Nikon D5600. We shoot pictures if the house that we animated a bit in After Effects by compositing it with 3D background and colorgrading. We filmed a part of the movie, the one with the doctor dismembering the fake body and downgraded the quality of the video so it would look older and bit more rubbish. The part with the unicorn coming to life and dying was done in stop motion. Basile also did the 2D animation where the video has colours.

Overall, we mixed all kind of movie types and techniques we could think of and tried to do something funny that would teach us a lot in a short amount of time.
